29 Leaps & The Coldest Night of the Year

Have you heard of 29 Leaps? What did you do to take part? Did you donate money to someone? Did you give time to a charity?

I asked Madi MacIntyre, the creator of 29 Leaps to describe the event in her own words. How it started, what her goal was & what the results were. Here’s what she said:

“I grew up in a family that  always gave back to the community and learned from a young age that it is very important to give to those that are less fortunate. One day I was thinking of what I could do on the extra day this leap year and realized that an extra day may not be a good thing for some people. Another day on the street, another day in line at the food bank or another day of being lonely.

From there I came up with the concept of 29 and began asking people to do 29 things in the month of Feb or on the 29 itself to pay it forward and help those in need. My goal starting off was to reach out and get 29 people to join the movement. Our website leap counter surpassed that in one day and my goals increased as time went on relating to 29 (290, 2900, 29 000, etc.)

The results of 29 Leaps was overwhelming with 240,000 acts of kindness is mind blowing. I had hoped that I would get to this point in the movement. I am so happy that it made it here, not for my sake, but for the sake of how many people are going to be helped as a result of it.

The number of people that will receive food from the food bank, the number of kids that will get clothing, and the number of smiles that will be put on peoples faces are tough to measure. It was so great to be part of a movement that showed the good in humanity that can result from social media and community engagement.

Going forward there are 29 days in 11 of the 12 months and there are a lot of people that need assistance in our community and around the world.”

My contribution to this challenge was to take part in The Coldest Night of the Year, a charitable event that raised money for the hungry, homeless & hurting all across Canada. Thanks to Brian Keith Ellis for making me aware of this great event!

Last year, the event took place in just Kitchener-Waterloo & Toronto. There were 406 walkers in total who raised $112,000. This year their goal was to have 2000 walkers & raise $300,000.

In Kitchener-Waterloo alone there were over 430 walkers who raise over $118,000! Canada wide, more than 3,000 walkers raise more than $600,000 for the hungry, homeless & hurting.

It was such a great event full of positivity & I know that it made a difference for a lot of Canadians this winter.

Working together, we can change the world!
